Fair Play

Fair Play Code

The Fair Play principles are integrity, fairness & respect.  With these, the spirit of participation thrives, fueled by honest rivalry, courteous relations & graceful acceptance of results.

ATHLETE’S FAIR PLAY CODE

1.       I will play for the fun of it, not just to please my parents or coach
2.       I will play by the rules
3.       I will be a good sport.  I will cheer all good performances whether they are my team’s or my opponents’
4.       I will work equally hard for myself & for my team.  My team’s performance will benefit & so will my own
5.       I will treat all athletes as I would like to be treated.  I will not interfere with, bully or take unfair advantage of any other athlete
6.       I will remember that the goals of the sport are to have fun, improve my skills & FEEL GOOD.  I won’t be a show-off or always try to be the centre of attention.
7.       I will co-operate with my coach, team-mates & opponents, for without them we don’t have rhythmic gymnastics.
8.       I will never argue with the officials’ decisions.  I will let my coach ask any necessary questions
9.       I will control my temper – no mouthing off, breaking or throwing equipment

PARENT’S FAIR PLAY CODE

1.       I will not force an unwilling child to participate in sports
2.       I will remember that children are involved in organized sports for their enjoyment, not mine
3.       I will encourage my child always to play by the rules
4.       I will teach my child that honest effort is as important as victory so that the result of each performance is accepted without undue disappointment
5.       I will turn defeat into victory by helping my child work toward skill improvement & good sportsmanship.  I will never ridicule or yell at my child for making a mistake
6.       I will remember that children learn best by example.  I will applaud good performances by our team & by members of the opposing team
7.       I will not publicly question the official’s judgement & will never question their honesty
8.       I will support all efforts to remove verbal & physical abuse from children’s sporting activities
9.       I will recognize the value & importance of volunteers.  Volunteers share their time & resources to provide recreational opportunities for my child

COACHES FAIR PLAY CODE:

A fair play coach believes & teaches that sport is an ethical pursuit, one that builds character & shapes attitudes.  As a coach, your fair play aims are to:
ü  help your athletes develop a positive self image
ü  promote respect for the rules, coaches, opponents, officials & their decisions
ü  encourage a constructive attitude toward participation and competition
ü  provide an equal opportunity for all to learn skills
ü  encourage these individuals to continue participation in sport

YOU are one of the most influential people in a child’s life.  Your job is not only to teach how to rotate a ribbon or bounce a ball, but also to teach how to perform and how to win & lose graciously.  You must also remind them that first and foremost sport is meant to be fun.  The athletic skills that young people learn from you may only be used for a few years, but the attitudes and character they develop toward themselves & others will last a lifetime.
